Overview
- .bm is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Bermuda.
- Introduced in March 1993 and implemented in March 1993 (delegation records cite March 31, 1993).
- Managed by the Registrar General (Registry General Department, Ministry of Home Affairs) through the Bermuda Network Information Centre (BermudaNIC). The Government of Bermuda is listed as the sponsoring authority.
- Registrations are permitted directly at the second level (example.bm) and at third level beneath designated labels (example.com.bm, example.org.bm, etc.).
History
- Originally delegated in March 1993 to Bermuda College as the administrative and technical contact.
- Redelegation requests and administrative changes occurred in the 2000s; a formal redelegation to the Registrar General of Bermuda was approved by the ICANN Board on 16 October 2007.
- The Registry is currently administered by the Registrar General/Ministry of Home Affairs and operated via BermudaNIC.

Registration Rules
Eligibility and general requirements:
- Registrants must be a company, organization, charity or individual located in Bermuda.
- Applications require: full legal name, registered office or principal place of business (or residential address for individuals), contact details (email and telephone), domain name registered agent, and technical contact details.
- Registrants must warrant that the domain is for lawful use and not registered in bad faith.
Validation process:
- BermudaNIC verifies intended use and nature of business and conducts Internet searches against third-party intellectual property and existing names.
- Documentary evidence is required for entities to demonstrate legal registration.
- Individuals must provide proof of Bermudian residency and photo ID if registering as an individual.
- Third-party agents managing registrations must submit an authorization form.
Reserved names and prohibitions:
- Names suggesting an official link to the Government, national significance, references to the British Monarch/Crown, certain geographic names, or names likely to infringe trademarks are reserved or prohibited unless the Registry agrees otherwise.
- Domain names that are defamatory, obscene, offensive, or otherwise unlawful may be rejected or cancelled at the Registry's discretion.
- Deliberate misspellings intended to divert traffic (typosquatting) are prohibited; the Registry evaluates cases individually.
Bad-faith and prohibited uses (examples that may justify cancellation or denial):
- Registration identical or confusingly similar to trademarks or existing domain names with intent to profit or disrupt competition.
- Registration primarily to sell or transfer the domain to a trademark owner for profit.
- Spamming, IP/privacy violations, distribution of malware, forging headers, illegal access to networks, obscene materials, and other illegal activities.
Technical and syntactic rules:
- Allowed characters: letters a–z (no accents), digits 0–9, and the hyphen (-).
- Hyphens cannot begin or end a domain name.
- Domain length must be between 3 and 63 characters.
Other operational notes:
- The Registry reserves the right to cancel, suspend, transfer, or otherwise change domain registrations for reasons including prohibited activities, protection of Registry integrity, placement on reserved lists per ICANN policy, or non-payment of fees.
