Country-code top-level domainsIDNDNSSEC
Overview
- .cl is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Chile.
- It is managed by NIC Chile, the domain name registry operated by the University of Chile.
- Registrations are made primarily at the second level; government sites commonly use third-level domains such as gov.cl and gob.cl.
- As of 2024-03-04 there were 703,367 registered .cl domains.
History
- Delegated and introduced on 15 December 1987.
- Administered by the University of Chile via NIC Chile.
- IDN (internationalized domain name) support for accented characters (á, é, í, ó, ú), ñ and ü was enabled in 2005.
- DNSSEC support was enabled in April 2011.
- Reported IPv6-enabled nameservers were noted in a May 2012 deployment report.
Usage and Audience
- .cl is popular within Chile and intended for entities connected with the country.
- Typical users include Chilean businesses, government entities (using gov.cl / gob.cl), local organizations and individuals.
- The TLD is also used for domain hacks and URL shorteners by international companies operating Chile-facing services.
Registration Rules
Eligibility
- Registration of second-level .cl domains is open to anyone worldwide. Since the December 2013 regulation change, foreign registrants no longer need a local Chilean national ID (RUN) or local representative.
Structure
- Primary registrations occur at the second level (example: example.cl).
- Government sites may use third-level namespaces such as gov.cl and gob.cl.
Allowed characters
- Supports standard Latin characters and also accented characters: á, é, í, ó, ú, ñ and ü.
Abuse, Suspension and Disputes
- Registrants must declare good faith and not use domains for illegal purposes or rights violations.
- NIC Chile may suspend domains involved in phishing, malware distribution, botnets or other DNS abuses.
- Dispute resolution follows the .cl Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy. A registrant may be stripped of a domain if the complainant proves all of the following:
- The domain is identical or confusingly similar to a name or trademark of the complainant;
- The assignee has no rights or legitimate interests in the domain; and
- The domain was registered or is being used in bad faith.
- Examples of bad faith indicators include registration primarily to sell the domain to the trademark owner, preventing a trademark owner from using their mark in a domain, disrupting a competitor, or creating confusion to attract users for profit.
- Conversely, evidence of legitimate use, common use by the assignee, or bona fide noncommercial/fair use may rebut a bad-faith claim.
SEO and Brand Impact
- .cl is widely recognized and trusted in Chile due to its country association and local adoption.
- DNSSEC support (since 2011) and IPv6-capable nameservers contribute to security and modern infrastructure practices, which can positively affect trustworthiness and reliability for users.
Notable Cases or Examples
- Microsoft used a .cl domain hack for the social networking service so.cl.
- Oracle used the domain ora.cl as a URL-shortening/brand-related domain.
- Government usage commonly appears under gov.cl and gob.cl namespaces.
