Generic top-level domainsDNSSEC
Overview
.creditunion is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) proposed under ICANN's New gTLD Program to provide a trusted, hierarchical namespace for entities with a meaningful nexus to the credit union sector. The TLD is intended for credit unions, trade associations, service organizations, regulators, and vendors serving the credit union community.
History
- Proposed under ICANN's New gTLD Program with CUNA (Credit Union National Association) as the sole applicant.
- Registry provider listed as Afilias and tld_status indicated as Active.
- CUNA announced a planned price range for domains of roughly $100–$200 and reported about 60% interest in polling of credit unions.
- In September 2020 CUNA announced transfer of the .creditunion registry to DotCoop.
- The applying entity, CUNA Performance Resources, LLC (CUNA LLC), was formed in Wisconsin in 2004 and is the registry applicant named in the application materials.
Usage and Audience
- Target audience:
- Credit unions
- Credit union trade associations and leagues
- Credit union service organizations
- Regulatory bodies tied to the credit union sector
- Vendors and service providers whose products are aimed primarily at credit unions
- Intended to create a cohesive, trusted namespace for the credit union community and related organizations.
Registration Rules
- Registrant eligibility: only organizations and individuals meeting a defined "nexus" with the credit union sector are permitted to register. CUNA LLC planned to publish a charter describing eligibility criteria.
- Validation: the registry considered internal validation, third-party validation, or membership-based automatic eligibility as options for validating registrants.
- Name selection criteria: initial registrations by third parties were to be limited to domain names that correspond with a registrant's business or trade name to reduce phishing, malware, and cybersquatting.
- Phased rollout:
- Stage One (3–12 months): primarily defensive registrations by CUNA LLC and select members to test technical, security and interoperability aspects.
- Stage Two: implementation of Sunrise and Trademark Clearing House (TMCH) rights protection mechanisms and expansion of registrations within the sector.
- Acceptable use policy: registrants must comply with prohibited-activity rules; failure to comply may lead to suspension or cancellation of registrations.
- Rights protection: the registry proposed enhanced Rights Protection Mechanisms, including a trademark challenge modeled on dotAsia's process.
- Privacy and data handling: registry operation intended to follow CUNA Inc.'s Statement of Privacy Principles and include contractual RRA language to notify registrars of purposes, recipients, access/correction mechanisms, and to take reasonable steps to protect personal data.
SEO and Brand Impact
- The registry positions .creditunion as a "trusted" and sector-specific namespace intended to convey authenticity and reduce abuse (phishing, malware, cybersquatting) within the credit union ecosystem.
- Transfer to DotCoop aligns .creditunion with cooperative-sector branding and restrictive registration policies aimed at maintaining trust and sector integrity.
Notable Cases or Examples
- CUNA LLC indicated it would register a small number of second-level domains for CUNA Inc. and select credit union members for testing and defensive purposes during the initial rollout.
- September 2020: ownership of the .creditunion registry was announced as transferred from CUNA to DotCoop.
