- Foreign legal entities may apply for domain names under .cu or specifically under .com.cu.
- Natural persons residing in Cuba may apply under .nat.cu.
Requirements for granting a domain name
- A legal entity may be granted a name if it:
- Constitutes a trademark granted to the applicant by the Oficina Cubana de la Propiedad Industrial (OCPI), or
- Fully matches the name of the applicant, its acronym, abbreviation, or legally recognized alias, or
- Meets other criteria that are not among listed exceptions.
- An individual may be granted a name if it:
- Constitutes a trademark granted by OCPI, or
- Is any other name that does not fall under the listed exceptions.
Prohibited or excluded names
A domain name will not be granted if it:
- Consists of generic, common, or usual terms;
- Consists of geographic terms or demonyms;
- Includes, is identical to, or is deceptively similar to the name of the country in Spanish;
- Matches top-level domain names, second-level generic domain names, protocols, applications, or Internet terminology;
- Consists of personal names, surnames, or appellations of a natural person unless it is a trademark granted by OCPI or a recognized personality;
- Includes terms or expressions harmful to public security, integrity, ethics, morals, public decency, the economy, independence, or national sovereignty.
Characters, IDNs, and length
- Valid characters: letters of the Spanish alphabet (a–z), digits (0–9), the hyphen "-", and the accented Spanish characters á, é, í, ó, ú, ü, and ñ.
- Domain names are case-insensitive.
- Hyphen rules: must not begin or end with a hyphen and must not contain two consecutive hyphens "--".
- Minimum length for a second-level or third-level domain: 3 characters (a minimum of 5 characters is recommended).
