Country-code top-level domains
Overview
.hm is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to the Heard and McDonald Islands, an uninhabited Australian external territory in the southern Indian Ocean. The domain is managed by the HM Domain Registry and has been opened to registrations from entities outside the territory. Actual use of the TLD is rare; the Australian government uses .aq for the islands' official site.
History
- Introduced: 24 July 1997.
- Registry / Sponsor: HM Domain Registry (an Australian registrar) manages the .hm zone and registration services.
- The Australian government, despite sovereignty over the territory, does not use .hm for the official site and instead uses the .aq domain for Heard & McDonald Islands information.
Usage and Audience
- Intended use: Entities associated with Heard and McDonald Islands.
- Actual use: Rare; the registry is open to outside registration and accepts registrations from persons and companies worldwide.
- Structure: All domains are registered directly at the second level (for example: example.hm).
