Country-code top-level domainsDNSSEC
Overview
.hr is the Internet country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Croatia. The letters "hr" derive from Hrvatska, the Croatian name for the country. The domain is administered by the Croatian Academic and Research Network (CARNET) and is widely used within Croatia. Registrations are available directly at the second level and at various third-level labels.
History
- Introduced and delegated into the DNS root zone on 27 February 1993 (implemented February 27, 1993) and in general use from March 1993.
- Administered by CARNET via the CARNET DNS Committee (policy) and the CARNET DNS Service (operations).
- Until 2010 the service was operated by SRCE; since 1 July 2010 operations have been divided among CARNET, SRCE and multiple registrars.
- Registered domains: 131,896 (data as of 3 April 2024).
Usage and Audience
- Intended for entities connected with Croatia: citizens, residents, Croatian companies and organizations.
- Very popular within Croatia for local businesses, institutions and individuals with ties to the country.
- Third-level registrations exist and include both open and restricted labels:
- .com.hr: allows registrations broadly (including non-Croatian registrants under certain conditions and local-contact requirements for some cases).
- .iz.hr (".from.hr") and other specialized third-level labels are available for individuals or specific uses.
- Second-level registrations directly under .hr are more popular than many third-level alternatives.
Registration Rules
- General connection requirement: registrants typically must demonstrate a connection to Croatia (citizen, permanent resident, registered company, or EU company with a VAT ID verified via VIES) — this requirement is common across categories except for certain third-level labels such as .com.hr.
- Free registrations:
- Offered to legal entities (companies, associations, political parties and other organizations with legal personality) registered in the Republic of Croatia.
- Offered to natural persons carrying out a registered independent activity in Croatia (craftsmen, artists, etc.).
- Each eligible user has the right to one free domain.
- Paid registrations:
- Available to legal entities with a place of business in an EU member state.
- Available to natural persons who are EU citizens and hold a personal identification number (PIN) issued by the competent Croatian authority.
- Structure: registrations can be taken directly at the second level (.hr) or at third level beneath several second-level labels (for example .com.hr, .from.hr).
- Character and length rules:
- Domain names may be 1 to 63 characters long.
- Allowed characters: letters of the Croatian and English alphabets (case-insensitive), digits 0–9, and the hyphen (-).
- Hyphens cannot be the first or last character and must not appear consecutively.
- Single- and two-character secondary domains and secondary domains with diacritical characters are possible.
- Dispute resolution: an arbitration dispute policy is in place for contested names.
SEO and Brand Impact
- .hr is a country-specific TLD and signals a strong association with Croatia, which can benefit local relevance and user trust for Croatian audiences.
- Usage and security statistics (historical):
- As of March 2017, about 30.33% of .hr domains were served over HTTPS, with the cPanel, Inc. Certification Authority being a common SSL issuer.
- Web server distribution at that time included Apache (65.93%) and Microsoft-IIS (13.23%).
- The domain's popularity in Croatia supports brand recognition for local businesses and organizations.
Notable Cases or Examples
- .com.hr: widely used third-level label; allows broader registration conditions and an unlimited number of registrations, though second-level .hr names are generally preferred.
- .iz.hr (marketed as ".from.hr"): example of a specialized third-level domain aimed at individuals.
- Administrative model: CARNET DNS Committee (with members largely from the academic community) sets policy, while operational responsibilities are shared among CARNET, SRCE and accredited registrars.
