Country-code top-level domains
Overview
.jo is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Jordan. The domain is intended for entities connected with Jordan and is commonly used by Jordanian companies, organizations, government bodies and individuals. An Arabic internationalized ccTLD also exists: .الاردن.
History
- Introduced in the DNS root zone on 23 November 1994.
- Administration: historically administered by the National Information Technology Center (NITC); administration is now handled by Jordan's Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship (MoDEE).

- As of 17 December 2022 there were 5,686 registered .jo domains.
Usage and Audience
- Target audience: Jordanian businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, non-profits and individuals.
- Common users: commercial organizations (.com.jo), educational institutions (.edu.jo, .sch.jo), government and military entities (.gov.jo, .mil.jo), ISPs and network operators (.net.jo), not-for-profits (.org.jo), individuals (.per.jo), and specialized registrations such as .phd.jo for PhD holders.
- Foreign entities: foreign nationals living in Jordan may apply for .per.jo domains. Foreign businesses with no presence in Jordan can use the Jordanian Intellectual Property Office to submit trademark-based applications for domain protection; the office files on their behalf.
Registration Rules
Eligibility and restrictions
- Registrations are reserved for Jordanian businesses, organizations and people; local presence or a Jordanian administrative contact is required.
- Must submit official documents as part of registration.
- Some names are prohibited, including but not limited to:
- Names that affect national security or stability.
- Names violating Jordanian laws, regulations or public morals.
- Names of families, clans, nationalities, common names, countries, cities or geographical locations unless the applicant owns a registered trademark.
- Religious names (names of religions, sects, holy sites, names of God, prophets or messengers).
- Any name listed in the periodically updated prohibited names list published by MoDEE.
- If a second-level label is inconsistent with the registrant's nature of work, registration may be rejected.
Second-level domains (typical intended uses)
- Registrations may be made directly at the second level (example.jo) or under specific second-level labels:
- .com.jo — Commercial organizations
- .edu.jo — Universities and educational institutions
- .sch.jo — Public and private schools
- .net.jo — Networks and Internet service providers
- .org.jo — Non-commercial or not-for-profit organisations
- .gov.jo — Governmental entities
- .mil.jo — Military entities
- .per.jo — Individuals and personal use
- .phd.jo — PhD holders
Characters, length and format
- Allowed characters: English letters (a–z), digits (0–9) and the hyphen "-" (hyphen cannot begin or end the name).
- Minimum length: 3 characters; maximum length: 63 characters.
- One- or two-character names are reviewed by senior management for approval and fee determination.
- Names must not begin with the "xn--" prefix (reserved for IDN punycode conversions).
- Names must not conflict with commonly used numbering/naming systems (example provided: names like "0xFF" may be disallowed because they represent numeric notation).
Registration procedure & documentation
- Applicants must provide official documentation as required by MoDEE; specific policy and registration procedures are published on the registry site (Registration policy available via DNS.jo).
- Foreign trademark-based applications are handled via the Jordanian Intellectual Property Office which submits the domain application on behalf of the trademark owner to ensure a Jordanian administrative contact.

Internationalized Domain Name
- Jordan also operates an Arabic-script ccTLD: .الاردن. Registration under the IDN is open to public and private organisations and companies in accordance with MoDEE policy.
