Overview
- .lu is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Luxembourg.
- The zone is administered via DNS-LU and managed/sponsored by RESTENA.
- Introduced on 27 January 1995.
- Registrations are made directly at the second level (example: example.lu).
- DNSSEC is supported.
- As of the cited registry figures, there were 114,506 registered .lu domains.
History
- Delegation/launch date: 27 January 1995.
- For many years registrations could only be submitted by postal mail or fax.
- On 18 September 2006 the registry introduced a domain name registrar model; paper registration remained possible but certified registrars became preferred by RESTENA.
- Historically, fees for a .lu second-level domain were €40 for creation (or contact modification) and €40 yearly (including VAT) as noted for earlier years.
- Since 1 February 2010 the administrative contact for a .lu domain no longer needed to be based in Luxembourg.
Usage and Audience
- Intended for entities connected with Luxembourg and commonly used within Luxembourg.
- Typical users include Luxembourg-based businesses, organizations, and private individuals; registration is also available to entities and natural persons regardless of place of establishment.
Registration Rules
Eligibility
- Domain names may be registered by legal entities and natural persons.
- Any entity may become the holder of a .lu domain, independent of its place of establishment.
Name requirements and characters
- A domain name must include between 1 and 63 alphanumeric characters.
- Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) are allowed; in addition to ASCII a-z and 0-9, accented characters used in Luxembourgish, French, and German are permitted: à, â, ä, æ, è, é, ê, ë, î, ï, ô, ö, œ, ù, û, ü.
- Hyphens ('-') are allowed but not as the first or last character; multiple hyphens may be used as long as they don't violate the position rule.
Restrictions and policy points
- Domain names that are clearly contrary to public order or offensive to common decency cannot be registered.
- It is the registrant's responsibility to ensure that the registration and use of a domain name do not infringe the rights of third parties.
Structure and process
- Registrations occur at the second level.
- The registry operates a registrar accreditation model; registrations can be completed via accredited registrars or via classic paper registration where supported.
