Generic top-level domainsIDNDNSSEC
Overview
- .mls is a generic top-level domain (gTLD). The acronym stands for "Multiple Listing Service" (often referred to as Multiple List Service), the system used by real estate agents and brokers to list and compare properties.
- .mls was delegated to the DNS Root Zone through ICANN's New gTLD Program on 20 April 2016.
History
- Delegation: .mls was delegated to the Root Zone on 20 April 2016 as part of ICANN's New gTLD Program.
- Applicants: notable applicants included Afilias and the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). CREA filed both a community application and a general application as a backup.
- Registry operations: registry operations were transferred from Verisign to the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) using the Fury Registry Platform on 27 March 2019.
Usage and Audience
- Primary audience: real-estate boards, brokers, agents and organizations involved with Multiple Listing Service systems.
- Intended registrants: CREA members and CREA's Foreign Affiliates (per CREA's registration policy statements). CREA indicated staged availability: initially to CREA Board members and Foreign Affiliate members, with a possible later phase for brokers and salespeople.
- Partnerships: CREA reached arrangements to allow partners such as the MLS Domains Association to verify and offer .mls domains in the United States.
Registration Rules
- Eligibility: CREA's stated registration policy restricts registrations to members of the Canadian Real Estate Association and its Foreign Affiliates.
- Naming restrictions and requirements (as stated by CREA):
- Boards using the .mls TLD must use their corporate name, or an acronym of that corporate name, as the second-level domain.
- Foreign Affiliate members must include geographical modifiers in their second-level domains on .mls or clearly indicate the geographical area served on site pages.
- Example: the Durham MLS could not register "Durham.mls" because of potential confusion with Durham, Ontario; it would need a geographic modifier such as "DurhamNorthCarolina.mls" or to display a clear geographical indicator on its homepage.
Notable Cases or Examples
- Community Priority Evaluation (CPE): in March 2014 a CPE panel awarded the community applicant 11 out of 16 possible points (14 were needed to prevail). As a result the community application did not succeed and the applicant needed to resolve contention by other means (for example auction).
- Objection: The Canadian Real Estate Association filed a Legal Rights Objection against competing applicant Afilias during the application process.
- Background note: the MLS Domains Association had been a previously public potential applicant but did not file an application under that name.
