Country-code top-level domainsDNSSEC
Overview
- .mm is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Myanmar.
- Introduced on 4 February 1997. The domain corresponds to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code MM.
- Registrations are structured at the third level beneath defined second-level categories (for example, example.com.mm).
- Intended for entities connected with Myanmar; historically there was relatively little local Internet activity under .mm.
History
- 1997: .mm was assigned and the first Internet access in Myanmar was set up by Eagle Group, which contracted Digiserve (UK) to provide DNS services.
- 1999: Eagle Group's service was shut down by the Burmese government.
- Early 2000s: Digiserve's name servers initially handled .mm. Authority for several second-level zones (com.mm, net.mm, edu.mm, org.mm) was later delegated to name servers managed by Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) in Yangon.
- February 2002: DigiServe DNS servers were hacked and .mm traffic (including gov.mm) was redirected for several days to a protest page.
- 2005: MPT retook management control of the .mm namespace and replaced Digiserve's name servers with its own.
- Later years: Myanmar Teleport (formerly Bagan Cybertech) provided registration services for a time but was shut down, leaving Myanmar Post & Telecoms as the primary controller.
- 12 June 2011: ISO 3166-1 code for Myanmar officially reflected MM (matching the ccTLD).
- 1 October 2019: The Department of Telecommunications began operating as the .mm Domain Registry; Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT), Yatanarpon Teleport Public Co., Ltd and Myanmar Technology Gateway Co., Ltd began acting as .mm domain registrars.
Usage and Audience
- Target audience: entities and individuals connected with Myanmar; applicants are generally required to be Myanmar entities or, for natural persons, permanent residents.
- Common uses include commercial (.com.mm, .biz.mm), network (.net.mm), organizational (.org.mm), educational (.edu.mm), government (.gov.mm, .hluttaw.mm) and personal (.name.mm, .per.mm) third-level registrations beneath their respective second-level labels.
- Historically there was limited local uptake; some activity came from foreign sites, and usage has grown more recently with the establishment of local registrars.
