Country-code top-level domains
Overview
- .mo is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Macau (Macao).
- The label "mo" derives from "Macao"/"Macau" and the ccTLD was introduced on 17 September 1992.
- Intended for entities connected with Portuguese Macau (1992–1999) and Macau SAR, China (1999–present).
- Actual use is limited to organizations and entities based in Macau.
History
- Introduced: 17 September 1992.
- Registry: administered under the Macao Network Information Centre (MONIC).
- Operation history noted in the sources:
- MONIC was operated by the University of Macau from 1992.
- Effective 12 March 2011, HNET Asia Limited was appointed by the Government of Macau to operate MONIC.
- Another source lists the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) as a managing entity for .mo.
- Internationalized TLDs: in early 2015 two Chinese-script top-level domains were reserved for Macau—.澳门 (simplified) and .澳門 (traditional); MONIC requested these domains.
Usage and Audience
- Primary users are entities physically or legally based in Macau:
- Local businesses and commercial entrepreneurs
- Government agencies (e.g., .gov.mo)
- Educational institutions (e.g., .edu.mo)
- Network service providers (e.g., .net.mo)
- Non-profit organizations (e.g., .org.mo)
- The namespace is used mainly for Macau-focused sites and services; registrations are limited to applicants with a Macau connection.
Registration Rules
- General eligibility:
- Applicants must be legal entities, commercial entrepreneurs, or self-employed persons registered in Macau.
- Registrations are restricted to local businesses and organisations in Macau.
- Second-level registrations (.mo) are available; second-level registrations have become available to registrants who already hold the same name at the third level.
- Second-level / second-tier structure and eligibility examples:
- .com.mo / .公司.mo: commercial entrepreneurs or self-employed persons registered in Macau.
- .net.mo / .網絡.mo: licensed network or telecommunication service providers or entities authorized by Macao SAR Internet resources.
- .org.mo / .組織.mo: organisations registered within Macau.
- .edu.mo / .教育.mo: Macau educational institutions accredited in Macau.
- .gov.mo / .政府.mo: public/government entities in Macau.
- Internationalized and Chinese-label rules:
- Chinese-script second-level labels (e.g., .公司.mo, .網絡.mo, .組織.mo, .教育.mo, .政府.mo) may contain English and Chinese characters, but at least one Chinese character is required.
- After approval of a Chinese-character domain under certain suffixes, the registrant may also use the corresponding simplified/traditional Chinese variant without additional fee.
- Allowed characters and length:
- For Latin-script second-level registrations (.com.mo, .net.mo, .org.mo, .edu.mo, .gov.mo): letters A–Z (case-insensitive), digits 0–9, hyphens (-), and Portuguese special characters (á, à, â, ã, ç, é, ê, í, ó, ô, õ, ú) are permitted.
- Domain name length: not more than 63 characters. (The rule emphasizes the 63-character limit after Punycode transcoding; Chinese characters and Portuguese special characters are counted in the Punycode length limitation.)
- Hyphen usage: hyphens must not appear at the beginning or end of a name; the third and fourth characters cannot both be hyphens.
- Reserved names: there is a list of reserved domain names maintained by the registry.
