Country-code top-level domainsIDNDNSSEC
Overview
.my is the Internet country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Malaysia. It is administered by the Malaysia Network Information Centre (MYNIC Berhad), under the Ministry of Digital and regulated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The namespace includes direct second-level registrations (example.my) and a set of categorized second-level domains (e.g., .com.my, .org.my).
History
- Introduced: 8 June 1987.
- Registry and operator: MYNIC Berhad (responsible for registration, registry maintenance and policy development).
- Registered domains: 317,532 (data recorded 2022-11-30).
- Security and policy features: DNSSEC is supported; MYNIC publishes a Dispute Resolution Policy (MYDRP).
Second-level global relaunch
- On 20 June 2024 MYNIC announced a relaunch of the .my top-level domain to allow second-level (.my) registrations globally, removing the Malaysian presence requirement for direct .my registrations.
- For the relaunch MYNIC partnered with Tucows Registry Services (technical operations) and Internet Naming Co. (marketing).
- Existing second-level domains (e.g., .com.my, .org.my) remain subject to local presence requirements and are otherwise unaffected.
Usage and Audience
- Primary audience: Malaysian individuals, companies and organisations; .my is popular within Malaysia.
- Common second-level categories and intended uses:
- .my — for Malaysian individuals and organisations (direct second-level registrations).
- .com.my — commercial organisations/activities.
- .biz.my — commercial activities or micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
- .net.my — network-related organisations/activities.
- .org.my — organisations that do not qualify for other categories.
- .edu.my — Malaysian educational organisations only.
- .gov.my — Malaysian government organisations only.
- .mil.my — Malaysian military organisations only.
- .name.my — personal use for Malaysian individuals.
- .coop.my — Malaysian co-operatives only.
Registration Rules
- Historical requirement: a Malaysian presence requirement applied to .my registrations; this requirement was removed for direct second-level .my registrations as part of the June 2024 relaunch. Second-level labels (e.g., .com.my, .edu.my) continue to require local presence as specified per category.
- Eligibility and compliance: Registrants must ensure domain names comply with Malaysian laws and regulations and must not be scandalous, indecent, obscene, offensive, or contrary to Malaysian public norms and values.
- Content and use restrictions:
- Domain content must not misrepresent eligibility criteria for the chosen category.
- Certain reserved names may require consent/approval from relevant authorities (e.g., State Secretary) per Malaysian law.
- Registration or use for illegal or unlawful purposes is prohibited; registrants must avoid infringement of third-party rights including intellectual property.
- The domain name should be directly related to the lawful content, goods and/or services provided by the resolving website.
- Enforcement and abuse handling:
- MYNIC may inspect domain names based on complaints or on its own initiative and monitors the registry for misuse or abuse.
- MYNIC defines abuse broadly to include malware, spam, phishing, botnets, malicious hosting, hacking, illegal content, misleading advertising, intellectual-property infringement, terrorism-related content and other unlawful activities.
SEO and Brand Impact
- .my is the national ccTLD of Malaysia and is widely used within the country, which supports local brand recognition for Malaysian businesses and organisations.
- MYNIC supports DNSSEC for .my, and the registry is overseen by government-related bodies; these factors contribute to technical security and institutional stability of the namespace.
