Overview
- .sg is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Singapore.
- It is administered and sponsored by the Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC).
- Registrations are processed via accredited registrars and are available at both the second level (e.g., example.sg) and at third level beneath category labels (e.g., example.com.sg).
- Internationalized ccTLDs for Singapore also exist: .新加坡 (Chinese) and .சிங்கப்பூர் (Tamil), registered in 2011.
History
- First registered in September 1988; the ccTLD was delegated/introduced on 19 October 1988.
- Administration and operation are handled by SGNIC (Singapore Network Information Centre).
- 2011: Two IDN ccTLDs (.新加坡 and .சிங்கப்பூர்) were registered for local-language domain names.
- 2 May 2013: SGNIC implemented a Singapore-presence requirement for domains registered after this date, requiring registrants to verify via the Verified@SG portal using SingPass.
- March 2023: The .per.sg personal category was retired.
- As of June 2025 there were 202,905 registered .sg domains.

Registration Rules
- Singapore presence requirement:
- SGNIC requires proof of Singaporean presence for domains registered after 2 May 2013 via the Verified@SG portal (SingPass login).
- Foreign applicants:
- Foreign applicants must appoint and duly authorize a local agent to act as the administrative contact.
- Restricted and prohibited labels (examples from SGNIC rules):
- Terms implying a link to the Singapore Government or its offices (e.g., "Singapore", "Singapura", "Singapore Government", "Government", "President"), unless justified and approved by SGNIC.
- Words suggesting links to statutory bodies, regulatory authorities or national controlling bodies.
- "SGNIC", "NIC" and variations that imply a link to SGNIC.
- Obscene, scandalous, indecent or otherwise unlawful phrases in any language.
- Geographical names or country names in any language, including two-letter ISO 3166 codes, unless strong justification is provided.
- Strings resembling second-level labels (.com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov) or the strings "www", "http", "https", and similar.
- Any phrase SGNIC deems undesirable or likely to cause public confusion, offend good taste or religion, or be contrary to Singapore's security or social interests.
- Allowed characters and label rules:
- Labels may contain Latin letters (a–z), digits (0–9), hyphens (with restrictions), and accepted non-Latin characters (e.g., Chinese) as permitted by SGNIC.
- Domain labels must be at least 1 and at most 63 characters long.
- Hyphen rules: hyphen cannot be the first or last character, and must not be placed in the third and/or fourth position of the label (per SGNIC rules).
- Structure and category-specific eligibility (summary):
- .com.sg: for commercial entities; applicants should be registered (or registering) with ACRA, Enterprise Singapore, or relevant professional bodies. Foreign corporations may apply with a local administrative agent.
- .org.sg: for organizations registered (or registering) with the Registry of Societies (ROS); other non-registrable entities such as community clubs, churches and embassies are also eligible in line with SGNIC policy.
- .edu.sg: restricted to educational institutions recognized or authorized by Singapore authorities (Ministry of Education, Ministry of Social and Family Development, Private Education Act registrations, or equivalent recognition).
- .gov.sg: reserved for government bodies, statutory boards and related government entities.
- .net.sg: for licensed Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) network providers, data hosting and related service providers; domain name must reflect the applicant's core business.
- .sg (second-level): open to applicants with a valid Singapore postal address.
- .新加坡 and .சிங்கப்பூர்: for Chinese- and Tamil-language domain names respectively.
