Overview
.sx is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Sint Maarten. The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code SX was allocated in December 2010 following the constitutional changes to the Netherlands Antilles. The TLD is intended for entities connected with Sint Maarten but is available to registrants worldwide.
History
- ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code SX allocated for Sint Maarten in December 2010 following the split of the Netherlands Antilles.
- Introduced: 20 December 2010 (implementation/registration processes followed in 2011–2012).
- ICANN Board voted to delegate .sx to SX Registry (a joint venture including OpenRegistry and MediaFusion) on 29 November 2011.
- General availability for public registrations began on 15 November 2012 after sunrise, local-priority and landrush phases.
- Registry operations transitioned to the Canadian Internet Registration Authority's (CIRA) Fury Registry Platform on 27 November 2017.
Usage and Audience
- Target audience: entities and individuals connected with Sint Maarten (businesses, public sector, local community).
- Actual use: receives some use within Sint Maarten but is also open to registrants outside the island because local presence is not required.
- Registrars: .sx domains are sold through accredited registrars appointed by the registry.
Registration Rules
Eligibility and general rules
- Any natural person or organization may register a .sx domain.
- Registrants must warrant that the registration will not infringe third-party rights, will not be used for unlawful or offensive purposes, and will comply with applicable laws and regulations.
- Certain names are restricted or reserved (including protected organization names and registry-reserved names).
- Premium and reserved names may be sold at higher prices.
- Registrars must be accredited by the registry.
Technical and syntax requirements
- Allowed characters: letters a–z (case insensitive), digits 0–9, and the hyphen "-".
- Domain labels cannot begin or end with a hyphen.
- The domain cannot have two consecutive hyphens in the 3rd and 4th positions.
- Underscores and other special characters are not allowed.
- Minimum label length: 3 characters.
- Maximum label length: 63 characters (excluding the ".sx" TLD).

- Grandfather period for holders of .an names ended: 2 May 2012.
- Sunrise (trademark protection): 3 May – 4 July 2012.
- Local Sint Maarten corporate and personal priority: 5 July – 4 September 2012.
- Landrush: 5 September – 4 October 2012.
- General availability (open registrations): began 15 November 2012.
