Country-code top-level domainsIDNDNSSEC
Overview
.ua is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Ukraine. Managed by Hostmaster Ltd., it is intended for entities connected with Ukraine and is widely used inside the country. DNSSEC is supported for the zone.
History
- Introduced and delegated into the root zone on 1 December 1992.
- DNSSEC was enabled for the .ua zone on 13 April 2012.
- On 26 February 2022, .ua domain name servers were transferred out of Kyiv for continuity reasons amid the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
- Registered domains: 549,180 (data as of January 2021).
Usage and Audience
- General audience: organisations, businesses, government bodies and individuals connected with Ukraine.
- Second-level direct registrations (.example.ua) are restricted and generally used by trademark holders; third-level registrations under public second-level domains (e.g., .com.ua, .org.ua) are popular and serve commercial, individual and non-profit uses.
- Common public second-level (third-level registrations beneath them):
- .com.ua — commercial organisations (paid)
- .in.ua — individuals (paid)
- .org.ua — non-commercial organisations (paid)
- .net.ua — network/service providers (paid)
- Special-purpose second-level domains (restricted or free):
- .edu.ua — educational organizations (free, eligibility required)
- .gov.ua — governmental organizations (free, eligibility required)
- .mil.ua — armed forces (restricted)
- .dod.ua — defence-related
- Numerous geographic second-level domains exist (e.g., .kyiv.ua / .kiev.ua, .lviv.ua, .odesa.ua / .odessa.ua) including mirrored transliterations; some geographic names have had new registrations terminated.
Registration Rules
- Registry operator: Hostmaster Ltd.
- Direct second-level (.name.ua) registrations:
- Restricted to owners of a trademark registered in Ukraine (or equivalent protection via international system where accepted).
- The domain name must match the trademark (spelling and permitted transformations as defined by policy).
- Applications require documentation proving legal protection of the mark.
- Third-level registrations beneath public second-level domains generally have no trademark restriction (rules vary by SLD).
- Character and technical rules (applicable to Latin and IDN registrations):
- Length: at least 1 and at most 63 symbols (counted in the zone/punycode representation for IDNs).
- Must begin and end with a letter or digit.
- Allowed characters: Latin letters, digits and hyphen for ASCII names; Cyrillic and approved characters per the Cyrillic IDN policy for IDN names.
- Hyphen restriction: names must not have hyphens simultaneously in positions 3 and 4.
- IDN names must begin with the "xn--" prefix in their ASCII (Punycode) form and contain at least one unique Cyrillic character for Cyrillic registrations.
- Transliteration and symbol handling policies:
- Official transliteration standards are used to convert Cyrillic to Latin for domain purposes.
- Some characters not allowed in domain labels (e.g., "&", "/", ".", "@", spaces) may be substituted with English-word equivalents (e.g., "and") or omitted; substitutions may optionally be marked with hyphens.
- Roman numerals in trademarks can be converted to Arabic numerals in the domain on request.
SEO and Brand Impact
- DNSSEC is enabled for .ua, which supports zone integrity and can improve trustworthiness for security-conscious users and services.
- As of March 2017, about 10.78% of .ua domains served content over HTTPS; Let's Encrypt Authority X3 was the most commonly used certificate authority among those. Web server distribution at that time showed Nginx serving about 68.97% of .ua domains and Apache about 17.75%.
Notable Cases or Examples
- The transfer of .ua domain servers out of Kyiv on 26 February 2022 is a notable operational continuity action taken during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
- The registry has implemented reserved and mirrored transliteration domain policies to preserve Ukrainian transliterations alongside older transliterated names; mirror domains reserve corresponding names across transliteration variants automatically for registrants.
