Country-code top-level domains
Overview
- .vi is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to the United States Virgin Islands.
- It is managed by the Virgin Islands Public Telecommunications System, Inc. and is used for sites associated with the U.S. Virgin Islands and occasionally for sites related to the "vi" text editor.
History
- Introduced: August 31, 1995.
- Registry / Sponsor: Virgin Islands Public Telecommunications System (now Virgin Islands Public Telecommunications System, Inc.).
- A notable policy milestone: until 2014, second-level registrations (more than two characters) were limited to Virgin Islands companies or residents; in 2014 COBEX allowed foreign entities to register .vi domains.
Usage and Audience
- Primary audience: organizations, businesses, governments, and residents in the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and Water Island).
- Secondary uses: projects or sites referencing the "vi" text editor and entities outside the territory that choose the ccTLD for branding.
- The registry offers reduced pricing for local residents and businesses compared to foreign registrants.
Registration Rules
- Registration levels:
- Second-level registrations directly under .vi are available.
- Third-level registrations are available under .co.vi, .com.vi, .org.vi and .net.vi.
- Pricing (as published by the registry):
- Standard registration: $75 for U.S. Virgin Islands residents, $300 for foreign registrants.
- Second-level TLDs: $75 for residents, $200 for foreigners (premium names may have different prices).
- Renewal fees are stated to be significantly lower than initial registration; additional fees apply for most contact or nameserver updates.
- Technical requirement: a domain must have at least two active nameservers to be registered.
- Legal warranty: applicants must warrant that the domain registration and use do not infringe the legal rights of a third party.
- Dispute policy: the registry does not provide its own dispute resolution; it advises use of the UDRP (no registry-specific dispute policy stated).
- DNSSEC: not implemented.
Registrars and Transfers
- Domains may be purchased directly from the registry or via official registrars; the registry does not publish a public list of official registrars.
- Transfers between registrars are supported using an Auth-Code.
