- Content restrictions:
- Domain names must not contain words or phrases that infringe national sovereignty, security, or social ethics, or violate traditional customs and values.
- Registrants should avoid names that cause confusion through abuse of polysemy or omission of Vietnamese diacritics.
- Character and format rules:
- Labels may contain letters a-z, digits 0-9, Vietnamese letters (IDN characters), and the hyphen "-".
- Labels must not begin or end with a hyphen and may not contain two consecutive hyphens.
- Uppercase and lowercase letters are not distinguished.
- At each label level, the maximum length is 63 characters (for IDNs the length is considered after conversion to ASCII/Punycode).
- Short domains and auctions:
- 1- and 2-character .vn domain names are allocated through auction.
- There are 43 one-character .vn domains (36 plain ASCII characters and 7 Vietnam-specific characters) and 1,296 two-character ASCII combinations.
Notable Cases or Examples
- Allocation of short domains: single- and two-character .vn names are specifically handled via auction to allocate scarce short names.
- International marketing: Dot VN, Inc.'s 2003 agreement with VNNIC to market .vn overseas is a notable milestone in promoting the namespace beyond Vietnam.
