Country-code top-level domainsDNSSEC
Overview
- .vu is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Vanuatu.
- It identifies entities connected with Vanuatu and is used both inside the country and by some registrants outside Vanuatu.
History
- Introduced: 10 April 1995.
- Initial delegation: Telecom Vanuatu Ltd.
- Redelegation: Management was transferred to the Telecommunications Radiocommunications and Broadcasting Regulator (TRBR); the transfer process and associated regulation changes occurred in the late 2010s and the redelegation was completed in 2019.
- Registry operator: GoDaddy Registry is documented as the registry operator for .vu (Wikipedia notes it was formerly Neustar).
- Regulatory developments: The Government passed the Vanuatu Domain Name Management and Administration Regulation (Order No. 206 of 2016), and TRBR requested the transfer of the .vu ccTLD in December 2018, with IANA reporting on the transfer in 2019.
Usage and Audience
- Intended use: Entities connected with Vanuatu (businesses, organisations, individuals).
- Actual use: Registrations are used both within Vanuatu and, to some extent, internationally.
- Structure: Registrations are taken directly at the second level (example: example.vu). Some third-level names exist under reserved second-level labels such as .gov.vu for government use.
Registration Rules
- Eligibility: Any natural person or organisation can register a .vu domain name.
- Reserved names: Some domain names are reserved (as maintained by the registry/administrator).
- Character and label requirements:
- Each label must be between 1 and 63 characters long.
- Allowed characters: letters (a–z, A–Z), digits (0–9) and hyphens (-).
- Labels must begin and end with a letter or digit (cannot begin or end with a hyphen).
- Hyphens are not permitted in the third and fourth positions simultaneously (i.e., labels must not contain hyphens in both the third and fourth character positions).
- Labels must not include spaces.
- Policy and terms: Terms and conditions and registration policies are published by the registry/administrator (e.g., vuNIC / hello.vu resources are used for .vu information and FAQs).
